3:13 p.m.I am sitting in a cafe (close to my apartment) in the garden. I experience a relief. Can it be that I am a real internet/email addict?Of course, I know that I have pursued addictive behavior previously (with food, not with drugs), and that there is all kind of addiction in my family (food, no food, drugs, alcohol, whatever you want). Are the only people that are sitting in a cafe at a sunny afternoon elderly ladies?—————————————And now, one of them is eating an apple pie.

The Hill reports that because of Republican defections, the House will be forced to debate a resolution on the Iraq War:House will debate Iraq By Alexander Bolton House Majority Leader John Boehner (R-Ohio) told Republican colleagues yesterday that they will have a full and lengthy floor debate on the Iraq war, a dramatic change of course for GOP leaders who had previously resisted Republican and Democratic calls for such a debate.Four House Republicans have signed a Democratic-sponsored discharge petition that would begin 17 hours of debate over Iraq on the House floor. Neil Abercrombie’s resolution (which was introduced last June) includes the following findings:(9) The armed forces of Iraq number more than 76,000 troops as of June 8, 2005, and are growing in number and capability daily.(10) The forces of the Iraqi Interior Ministry number more than 92,000 personnel as of June 8, 2005, and are growing in number and capability daily.(11) The United States has in place a timetable for training, equipping, and employing Iraqi security forces to take over the counterinsurgency mission from coalition forces.Did you know that Neil Abercrombie and 66 of his colleagues are so upbeat about Iraq? (Of course, that’s not saying much, because House Democrats are so far to the left that half of them qualify as ‘among the most liberal’).The only major difference between the Abercrombie position and the White House is this:to initiate such a withdrawal as soon as possible but not later than October 1, 2006.Abercrombie wants us to tell the insurgents when we’re leaving.John Murtha has another of the Democrats’ resolutions on Iraq.

Christopher Hitchens in Slate on the Mary McCarthy CIA leak case, here:Joseph Wilson’s RevengeWhy no special prosecutor for the latest CIA leak case?By Christopher HitchensPosted Monday, April 24, 2006, at 1:31 PM ETSlateIf Mary O. (You can look it up if you like in my book No One Left To Lie To.) At that time, I interviewed a number of CIA people, both on and off the record, and came to the conclusion that it was the wrong factory in the wrong place and had been blitzed mainly because of Clinton’s difficulties with Monica Lewinsky. And the New York Times rushes to her aid, with a three-hankie story on April 23, moistly titled Colleagues Say Fired CIA Analyst Played by the Rules. This is, after all, the line sternly proposed by the New York Times and many other media outlets in the matter of the blessed Joseph Wilson and his martyred CIA spouse, Valerie Plame.I have a sense that this is not the media line that will be taken in the case of McCarthy, any more than it was the line taken when James Risen and others disclosed the domestic wiretapping being conducted by the NSA. But one cannot argue, in the case of a man who says that his CIA wife did not send him to Niger, that the proof that his wife did send him to Niger must remain a state secret. I await the squeals that will follow when this rod is applied, which it will be again and again.Joseph Wilson update: In my article last week on Wilson’s utter failure to notice the visit of Saddam Hussein’s chief nuclear diplomat to Niger, I mentioned his substitution of another Iraqi name—Mohammed Saeed al-Sahaf—as having just possibly approached some Niger businessmen and officials at an OAU summit in Algeria in 1999.

The subject at the time was abortion and in true illustrating absurdity by being absurd fashion, here was my proposed fair solution on the matter (followed by my friend Albert’s fair rejoinders)…A ‘fair’ solution on abortion[ Jan-2001 Archive ] ——————————————————————————–Posted by Shawn on January 17, 2001 at 13:46:16: I do not support the moral angle of the solution I am about to propose but consider the absurdity of the current law: A woman who chooses to not kill her child sticks the father of the baby with child support for 18 years.
